Types of VA Benefits: Compensation vs. Pension
VA Compensation Benefits
Disability compensation is a benefit paid to a veteran due to injuries or diseases that happened while on active duty, or were made worse by active military service. It is also paid to certain veterans disabled from VA health care. The benefits are tax-free. You may be eligible for disability compensation if you have a service-related disability and you were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.
The amount of basic benefits paid ranges, depending on how disabled you are. Our attorney can seek the benefits you deserve — whether you are 10 percent disabled or 100 percent disabled.
Note: You may be paid additional benefit amounts, in certain instances, if:
- You have very severe disabilities or loss of limb(s)
- You have a spouse, child(ren) or dependent parent(s)
- You have a seriously disabled spouse
VA Pension Benefits
VA pension benefits are not only required to be awarded due to a service-connected injury. A veteran is entitled to a VA pension benefit if he or she is: 1) discharged from service under conditions other than dishonorable; 2) served at least 90 days of active military service, one day of which was during a war time period (If active duty was entered after September 7, 1980, generally he or she must have served at least 24 months or the full period for which called or ordered to active duty – there are exceptions to this rule); 3) countable family income is below a yearly limit set by law; and 4) age 65 or older, or, permanently and totally disabled, not due to his or her own willful misconduct.
VA pension benefits are higher than Supplemental Security Income benefits, but veterans cannot receive both.
